Updated 1L Hiring Cycle & Tips for Staying Prepared

We hope your semester is going well and that you’re finding your studies both challenging and rewarding. We’re reaching out to share an important update about the evolving 1L hiring cycle: many major law firms are now beginning outreach and recruitment earlier than in previous years.

Through conversations with many internal law firm recruiters, a consistent theme has emerged: to stay competitive in the current war for talent, firms are focused on identifying the most promising candidates as early as possible and taking proactive steps to secure their commitment. This industry-wide shift means that firms are engaging with law students sooner, sometimes even before 1L first semester grades are released. Recruiters are evaluating candidates based on a range of factors, including soft skills, undergraduate school rankings, academic accomplishments, and internal referrals from Partners and Associates. Additionally, many firms are moving away from traditional On-Campus Interviews (OCIs) and instead encouraging direct applications from law students. In this context, your cover letter—and especially your ability to highlight meaningful connections with attorneys or alumni at the firm—can make a significant impact.

As you prepare for this new landscape, it’s important to be aware that early outreach is quickly becoming the norm. Law firms are beginning their recruitment process earlier, often before first semester grades are available, so being proactive in your application process can help you stand out. Firms are considering factors beyond grades, such as interpersonal skills, leadership, undergraduate achievements, and referrals, making the cultivation of relationships with attorneys and alumni especially valuable. Many firms now prefer direct applications, so tailoring each application to the specific firm and using your cover letter to highlight any personal connections or relevant experiences is key. A well-written cover letter can differentiate you from other candidates, and mentioning connections with firm attorneys or alumni shows initiative and helps personalize your application. Staying informed and prepared allows you to approach each opportunity with confidence, and seeking guidance from career services, mentors, and networking contacts can help you navigate this new hiring process. Here are a few practical suggestions to help you feel prepared and confident as you navigate this new landscape.

1. Keep Your Résumé Polished: Here are a few key résumé tips from Bonnie Youn, GAPABA Board Member and Legal Recruiter Managing Director at The RMN Agency:

  • Clean and Concise: A clean, concise, and well-organized résumé is your first impression. Make sure it’s one page, uses clear headings and consistent formatting, and is free of typos and grammar mistakes.

  • Proofread carefully Running a spell/grammar check and having another set of eyes review your résumé can help you catch errors you may have missed.

  • Tailor your résumé to each employer; even small adjustments can make a big difference. For those interested in intellectual property, highlighting strengths in STEM is a smart move

  • Use strong action verbs and quantify results where possible.

  • Highlight transferable skills (writing, research, leadership, teamwork). However, to the extent that you can, please identify/bullet-point specific, quantifiable accomplishments in your past experience, not just skillsets.

2. Attend Firm Events: Engagement matters. Show up and make positive connections.

3. Monitor Firm Websites: Many firms are posting 1L summer opportunities as early as Fall.

4. Attend Holiday Parties/Bar Association Gatherings: These events can be informal but are a wonderful opportunity to network and decompress during finals season.

  • Don’t underestimate the relationships you can form outside of structured recruiting—holiday gatherings often bring together attorneys, alumni, and students in a relaxed setting.

  • Be ready with your small-talk “elevator pitch”—share your story, why you went to law school, your undergraduate background, how law school is going, and what kind of law you hope to practice (being open and flexible is always acceptable).

  • Keep conversations balanced and engaging—don’t talk for too long without allowing for an exchange.

  • And remember, moderation is key; you want to be remembered for the right reasons.

5. If All Else Fails—Don’t StressHiring continues throughout the year.

  • Many smaller and midsize firms recruit later in the cycle.

  • Although Big Law’s hiring process is happening earlier (some even doing interviews and giving out offers before 1L first semester grades), paths into the legal profession are diverse and flexible. Most non-big law roles are continuing to hire similarly to years past.
